Reacting to Karnataka Governor Thawarchand Gehlot’s decision to approve the prosecution of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the alleged MUDA scam, UP Congress chief Ajay Rai accused the BJP of conspiring to weaken Congress-led governments. He claimed the Governor was acting under central government directives and highlighted past allegations against former Karnataka CM Yediyurappa, implying BJP’s double standards.
Rai pointed out that during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, several governors actively campaigned for PM Modi, demonstrating a lack of respect for their constitutional roles.
On August 17, the Karnataka Governor’s Secretariat issued an order sanctioning the prosecution of Siddaramaiah under the Prevention of Corruption Act and Bharathiya Nagarika Suraksha Samhitha. In response, Siddaramaiah criticized the decision as unconstitutional, arguing that the Governor was acting more as a representative of the BJP than as a custodian of the Constitution.
The case stems from a complaint filed by social activist Snehamayi Krishna, alleging that Siddaramaiah and others forged documents to claim compensation from the Mysuru Urban Development Authority. Siddaramaiah has denied any wrongdoing, stating that all actions were lawful and that the plot in question was allotted to his wife during the BJP’s tenure in 2021.
