BJP, Congress Seek More Time to Respond to EC Notice Regarding MCC Violation

Following the Election Commission of India’s notice regarding alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the BJP has requested a week, while the Congress has asked for an additional 14 days to respond.

The ECI, citing Section 77 of the Representation of the People Act, has tasked party presidents with initial responsibility for controlling star campaigners. Both national presidents were required to respond by 5 pm today, but sources indicate that both parties have sought extensions.

The Election Commission emphasized the need for parties to take primary responsibility for the behavior of their candidates, particularly star campaigners, noting the seriousness of campaign speeches by high-ranking individuals.

The BJP accused Rahul Gandhi of falsely claiming a rise in poverty and urged strict action against him. Additionally, they accused him of perpetuating a North-South divide based on language and region.

Meanwhile, the Congress lodged a complaint against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for alleging at a rally in Rajasthan that the Congress aimed to redistribute public wealth to Muslims.

The Congress memorandum proposed disqualifying candidates who attempt to divide Indian citizens, regardless of their stature or position, as the only suitable response to allegations of corrupt practices.
