Bhopal: Vegetables prices sky-rockets as supply nosedives due to rain

Prices in the state capital have soared due to persistent rain and a decrease in vegetable supply.

“Coriander, chillies, and tomatoes had gotten rotten due to water,” Mehboob, who opened a vegetable shop in Bhopal’s Vitthal market, explained, “and tomatoes that were previously sold at 140 kg were priced at Rs 160 kg on Saturday.”

Tomatoes have been harmed at this location. They are now on their way from Bengaluru. Chilli and coriander are also available in bulk for Rs 125 per kg. Tomatoes are wholesale priced at 2200 to 2300 rupees per carat.” Heavy rains have caused a vegetable supply shortage in the city, resulting in an increase in vegetable costs.

“Tomatoes are being sold at Rs 140 and Rs 160 per kg in retail. If there is further rainfall, the prices of tomatoes will increase in the same way,” added Mehboob.

Most vegetable prices have increased in both the retail and wholesale markets. Prices are projected to climb further as a result of the damage done to vegetable crops by severe rains.

Heavy rain has inundated farms throughout the state, causing damage to ready-to-harvest vegetable harvests. Vegetable prices are rising by the day due to rising demand and limited availability. Smita, a Bhopal resident, on the other hand, stated that her kitchen budget had completely fallen apart and that she had to think twice before purchasing tomatoes.
