Bengaluru Metro luggage fee sparks debate as commuters question ₹30 charge for oversized and extra baggage.
Bengaluru Metro luggage fee has become the latest talking point in India’s most expensive metro system and recently, a commuter questioned the policy of charging ₹30 for carrying an additional suitcase and shared his experience online. His post triggered strong reactions on social media also many commuters expressed shock, while others defended the rule by pointing to the issue of space inside trains. The debate highlights how Namma Metro’s fare system, already costly, has now drawn more criticism with the luggage fee.
The controversy began when user Avinash Chanchal posted on X, formerly Twitter, about his experience. He revealed that he had to pay ₹30 for carrying his bag while traveling in Bengaluru Metro. He called the system exclusionary and said that the service was already the most expensive in the country. His words captured the frustration of many who feel that the burden on passengers has grown unfairly.
Avinash’s post sparked a flood of comments. Some users mocked the idea of paying extra for luggage. One commuter asked, “What on earth is even a luggage oversize on a Metro with Namma Bengaluru Metro.” Another insisted that the fee was fair. “If the bag is bigger than what can fit in the scanner, you pay. I’ve carried a suitcase and backpack multiple times without being charged because they fit within the limits. It’s about not inconveniencing others,” he wrote. Others disagreed, pointing out that there is no proper space for luggage in the trains. “Paying extra just to hold it makes little sense,” a user remarked. Some even argued that passengers should be grateful they can bring luggage at all, given that items like alcohol or drills are strictly banned.
The Bengaluru Metro luggage fee applies when a commuter carries more than one piece of luggage or an oversized bag. The amount is ₹30 per luggage. Passengers must purchase the luggage ticket at the Customer Care Centre before entering the station. The official policy allows one person to carry one piece of luggage with a maximum dimension of 60 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm. Any additional or oversized baggage requires the ₹30 ticket.

The policy also includes penalties. If a passenger carries excess baggage without a valid luggage ticket, a fine of ₹250 is levied. In disputes, an authorized Metro Railway Officer has the power to remove the passenger from the train, even if the traveler has a valid journey ticket. These strict conditions underline how Bengaluru Metro enforces its baggage rules with firm control.
