A 27-year-old woman was killed in a road accident in West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district while attempting to flee from suspected eve-teasers who were chasing her in another car.

The victim, a Chinsurah-based event management professional, was travelling to Gaya with three of her colleagues when the accident took place at Panagarh around 9:30 pm on Sunday, according to police. Two other car passengers were left with critical injuries.

Harassment on the Highway

The woman and her colleagues had only refilled their car at a petrol pump when a white car with five men started following them.

“As soon as they got on the highway, the men in the other car started making indecent comments towards the victim and started driving dangerously,” a senior police officer told PTI.

The suspects allegedly obstructed the victim’s car dangerously close to a road divider, causing a fatal accident. The car overturned, and because the victim was sitting in the front, she sustained serious injuries. She was taken to a nearby hospital but was pronounced brought dead.

Suspects Flee the Scene

After the accident, the harassers left their car and ran away. The police have taken both cars into custody and filed an FIR at the Kanksa police station.

Alcohol in Suspects’ Car

Initial investigations indicate the accused were drunk at the time of the incident. “We found glasses in the car with alcohol content,” the officer said. The vehicle owner has been found to be a resident of Panagarh.

The authorities have initiated a manhunt for the accused, and the body of the victim has been taken for post-mortem examination.
