Delhi Police have exposed a large racket of human trafficking where newborn babies were being sold to rich families in the Delhi-NCR area. Based on specific inputs, police arrested three gang members in the Dwarka area and rescued a four-day-old baby. The alleged kingpin, a 40-year-old woman Saroj, is absconding.
Trafficking Network Operated Across States
The gang operated a large network in Delhi, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. The group preyed on infants from poor tribal villages along the Gujarat-Rajasthan border, the police said. They have allegedly sold over 30 newborns so far.
The arrested persons are Yasmin, Anjali, and Jitendra. Interesting to note is that Anjali had already been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in another case of trafficking but returned to her criminal pursuits after being granted bail.
Mastermind Saroj Orchestrated Deals With Rich Families
Under questioning, the accused disclosed that Saroj directly coordinated with the rich families who paid ₹5 to ₹10 lakh each for a child. Saroj tasked Yasmin with kidnapping children, after which the babies were brought to her. She would then brief Anjali on the venue for the delivery of the babies.
Saroj made the collections personally and offered shares to her co-conspirators. Both Anjali and Yasmin were also found to have been involved in prior illicit egg donations.
Vigorous Surveillance and Investigation
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Ankit Chauhan informed, “The team worked on top-secret information for 20 consecutive days after which they arrested the three individuals in Uttam Nagar on April 8.”
Police checked call detail records (CDRs) of more than 20 suspicious mobile numbers in the course of investigation. Authorities are now determining the families who purchased these babies and ensured that legal action shall be taken against them.
