Murshidabad district is on high alert as suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir plans to lay the foundation stone of a mosque named “Babri Masjid” in Beldanga on Saturday. Humayun Kabir announced that around 2,000 volunteers would assist in the event. Residents, police, and authorities are preparing for what could be a tense day.

By Friday afternoon, security forces gathered at Beldanga police station, and multiple layers of protection were deployed. The government stationed 19 companies of the CISF, Rapid Action Force units, and local police across Rejinagar and nearby areas. Two BSF companies are on standby along NH‑12. In total, more than 3,500 personnel are expected to be on the ground.

Authorities said these steps were necessary to prevent any law-and-order issues. Residents have been asked to cooperate and avoid spreading rumors.

Babri Masjid Murshidabad: Court Orders Strict Oversight

The Calcutta High Court, responding to a public interest petition, directed the state government to maintain strict law and order. Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul led a division bench that highlighted the importance of resident safety. The government has already mobilized significant forces to ensure a peaceful event.

Humayun Kabir Speaks on the Babri Masjid 2.0 Event

Kabir, who was suspended from the TMC on Thursday, was questioned at Rejinagar police station for several hours on Friday evening. Earlier in the day, he supervised preparations and assured reporters that the ceremony would remain peaceful and non-political.

“There will be no speeches, no party flags, no politics. The Quran will be read for two hours. This is not something new,” he said. Kabir added that around 30,000 packets of biryani were being arranged for attendees.

Political Reactions and Local Concerns

The TMC has distanced itself from the event. Party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh called it a “conspiracy” by political rivals to create controversy ahead of elections.

Residents said they were watching the situation with mixed feelings. Some supported Kabir’s initiative, while others expressed apprehension over potential unrest. Security patrols and barricades have become highly visible throughout Beldanga, reflecting the seriousness of the preparations.

A Community on Edge

Murshidabad has a diverse population and a history of communal sensitivity. The event could test the district’s resilience. Authorities hope that careful management, strict security, and calm behavior from residents will prevent any disturbances.

Experts say that even if Kabir’s plans remain peaceful, the symbolism of the name “Babri Masjid,” mass mobilisation, and the anniversary context could spark tensions. Everyone in the region is urged to remain alert, cooperative, and calm.
