Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Thursday indicated that the House could be convened for a special session, if necessary, to address the controversy surrounding references made in the Assembly to Sikh Guru Shri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji. He emphasised that in order to preserve the dignity of the legislature and ensure democratic accountability, all decisions must be taken within the House itself. Speaking to the media, Gupta said that given the seriousness of the issue and the sanctity of the Assembly, the matter would be handled strictly in accordance with constitutional provisions and parliamentary norms. “All decisions in this regard must be taken by the House alone and not elsewhere,” he said. The Speaker said the Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat has issued a formal notice to the Director of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Punjab, seeking a comprehensive response along with the scientific basis of the forensic report. The FSL has been asked to submit its reply by January 22. Gupta stressed that the Assembly would not allow any compromise with truth or interference in due process. Underlining the sensitivity of the matter, Gupta said it relates to references concerning Shri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji, whose supreme sacrifice represents courage, conscience, and the defence of faith. He noted that paying respect to the Sikh Gurus is deeply embedded in India’s civilisational and moral traditions, adding that a failure to accord such reverence reflects a lack of sensitivity and respect.
