Assembly By-Elections: Voting Turnout Across 8 Seats in 6 States & 1 UT Amid Heavy Security

Voter turnout picks up across 8 Assembly bypolls in 6 states and J&K UT with early trends showing strong contests and peaceful polling.

Voting began on Tuesday at 7 a.m. for the by-elections to the eight Assembly constituencies across six states and one Union Territory amidst tight security.

The contests include Budgam and Nagrota in Jammu and Kashmir, Ghatsila in Jharkhand, Dampa in Mizoram, Tarn Taran in Punjab, Anta in Rajasthan, Jubilee Hills in Telangana and Nuapada in Odisha.

Voter turnout recorded at 9 a.m. in various constituencies ranged from around 9% in Budgam to 18% in Dampa indicating a steady start.

Nuapada Bypolls Turnout in Odisha

In Odisha’s Nuapada constituency, BJP candidate Jay Dholakia, son of late BJD MLA Rajendra Dholakia was among the early voters, exuding confidence in development possibilities in the region. The bypoll pits 14 candidates against each other including BJD’s Snehangini Chhuria and Congress Ghasiram Majhi. Voting concludes at 5 p.m. in most booths, other than 47 Left-Wing Extremist affected areas where polling concludes an hour before that.

Jubilee Hills Bypolls Turnout in Telangana

In Jubilee Hills of Telangana, BRS candidate Maganti Sunitha cast her vote along with her family. The bypoll was necessitated by the death of her husband MLA Maganti Gopinath. The constituency which has more than 4 lakh registered voters, is seeing a three cornered fight between the ruling Congress Naveen Yadav, BJP’s L. Deepak Reddy and Sunitha. The security across the 407 polling booths continues to be tight as nearly half of them have been marked as critical.

Ghatsila Assembly Bypolls Turnout in Jharkhand

Over 2.5 lakh voters are determining the fate of 13 candidates in Jharkhand’s Ghatsila seat. The contest is mainly between Somesh Chandra Soren of the JMM and BJP’s Babulal Soren. This by-poll has been necessitated by the death of JMM MLA Ramdas Soren, thereby retaining the ruling party’s emotive and political interest in the constituency.

Dampa Assembly Bypolls Turnout in Punjab Mizoram

In Mizoram’s Dampa constituency, voting started smoothly at 41 booths along the Tripura and Bangladesh borders. The ruling ZPM has fielded popular singer and preacher Vanlalsailova against MNF’s R. Lalthangliana, Congress John Rotluangliana and BJP’s Lalhmingthanga. The seat fell vacant following the death of MNF MLA Lalrintluanga Sailo.

Tarn Taran Bypolls Turnout in Punjab

Brisk polling was recorded in Tarn Taran in Punjab amidst tight security. Fifteen candidates are in the fray with AAP’s Harmeet Singh Sandhu being considered a key contender. The seat is being seen as a major test for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s leadership after the death of MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal.

Anta Assembly Bypoll Turnout in Rajasthan

Voting in Rajasthan’s Anta constituency started early with more than 2.28 lakh eligible voters. Congress has fielded former minister Pramod Jain Bhaya against BJP’s Morpal Suman. The seat was vacated after the disqualification of BJP MLA Kanwar Lal Meena following a criminal conviction.

Budgam Bypoll Turnout in J&K

In Budgam, Jammu and Kashmir, early turnout remained low at just over 9%. Election officials reported peaceful voting, though participation is expected to rise later in the day as security forces maintain strict vigil.

Nagrota Bypoll Turnout in J&K

Nagrota in J&K fared relatively better with more than 15% turnout by 9 a.m. Voting started early in most of the booths amidst tight security and pleasant weather. This augured well for today’s poll process.
