Assam: Semiconductor Plant to Get Edge After US Tariff Hike on China

Semiconductors being manufactured in Assam are set to get an edge amid tariff hikes on China by the US.

US President Joe Biden announced significant tariff increases on Chinese imports, including electric vehicles (EVs) and semiconductors.

Assam Cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika took to X to highlight the prospects of semiconductors being manufactured in the state. “We woke up to some good news for my constituency, Jagi Road. The United States has imposed a 50% tariff on Made in China Semiconductors.

What does this mean ? The soon to be rolled out semiconductors from the Tata plant in my constituency will now be globally more competitive. This also means – more opportunities for my youngsters.

Above all it reflects the strategic vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri
@narendramodi Ji and Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr @himantabiswa to bring this investment at the right time and right place !!!,” Hazarika posted on Twitter.

Centre approved a proposal by Tata Electronics to build a state-of-the-art, greenfield semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad, Assam. The facility will be built with an investment outlay of INR 27,000 crore and is expected to generate over 27,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region.

PM Narendra Modi had virtually laid the foundation stone for Tata Group’s ‘Semiconductor Assembly and Test Facility’ in Assam.
