Assam Rifles Deploy Anti-Drone Systems in Manipur Amid Rising Tensions

The Assam Rifles (AR) have recently deployed anti-drone systems across Manipur to address potential threats from rogue drones, with additional anti-drone guns being introduced by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to bolster security measures in the state. The Manipur Police confirmed via social media that the AR has stationed several anti-drone systems at fringe areas, while the CRPF has tested and provided one system to the deployed forces. Further anti-drone equipment is expected to arrive soon.

The state police are also in the process of procuring their own anti-drone systems to enhance security and effectively manage drone-related threats.

Tensions have escalated in Manipur following a recent attack by Kuki militants, who reportedly used long-range rockets in civilian areas, resulting in the death of a 78-year-old man, RK Rabei, and injuring six others in Bishnupur. The attack also resulted in the destruction of three bunkers—two in Mualsang village and one in Laika Mualsau village, Churachandpur. Additionally, suspected Kuki militants fired upon the Superintendent of Police in the region.

Senior police officials, including the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), have visited the affected areas to oversee countermeasures. A team from the Mobile Forensic Unit is on-site to gather evidence.

IGP K Kabib reported that after a fierce exchange of fire in Nungchappi village, three bodies of militants were recovered. He also noted that a 63-year-old civilian was killed in Jiribam by suspected Kuki militants. In response, the Manipur Police are intensifying combing operations, covering a minimum of 3-5 km on both sides of the hill and valley, and reinforcing checkpoints.

Prohibitory orders have been issued by the district magistrate, restricting gatherings of more than five people and the carrying of arms. Security forces are conducting search operations and securing vulnerable areas. Movement of essential vehicles along NH-37 and NH-2 is being ensured with strict security measures in place.

As part of the heightened security effort, 92 checkpoints have been established across various districts in Manipur, leading to the detention of 129 individuals for violations.
