Two young women from Assam and Nagaland were allegedly harassed and physically assaulted in South Delhi’s Nehru Place, in an incident that has once again raised concerns over the safety of women from the Northeast in the national capital.
According to the complaint filed at Kalkaji Police Station, the incident took place outside M-Houz Club in Nehru Place around 6:30 am on May 10, 2026. An FIR numbered 0259/2026 was registered under sections 115(2), 74, 126(2), 351(2), 79 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
The complainant, Rimali Das, a resident of South Delhi originally from Assam, alleged that she and her friend Anuja Bhagat were at a roadside tea stall near M-Houz Club when two boys began catcalling them. She said more men soon joined them and started provoking a fight.
According to the FIR, the situation quickly turned violent. The complainant alleged that the men began beating up her friend and molesting her. She further stated that her friend’s clothes were torn during the assault. The women also alleged that the group verbally abused them and used racist slurs, including calling them “Randi”.
The complaint further stated that one of the accused allegedly attacked her friend with a bamboo stick while the women were trying to escape from the spot. The victims claimed the group continued blocking their path and threatened them with consequences if they spoke publicly about the incident.
The women alleged that several people present at the location recorded videos of the incident instead of helping them. According to the victims, despite repeated appeals for assistance, there was no immediate intervention from bystanders.
The FIR document shows that the information was received at Kalkaji Police Station at 1:45 pm on May 10, while the General Diary entry was made at 1:53 pm. The case was later assigned to Sub-Inspector Anjali for investigation.
The victims also alleged that the police response after the incident was slow and casual. They claimed officers at the Kalkaji Police Station initially hesitated to register an FIR. According to them, even after the Northeast Special Police Unit intervened, they were not provided a copy of the complaint immediately.
The women further alleged that the same group of men continued intimidating them after the incident. They claimed they were followed and later threatened through social media platforms.
In the complaint, Rimali Das stated that she could identify the accused if they were brought before her. She appealed to the police to take strict action against those involved and ensure justice.
The incident has triggered fresh concerns over the safety and treatment of Northeastern women living in Delhi. Cases involving harassment, racial abuse and violence against people from the Northeast have repeatedly drawn public attention in recent years, with activists and community members demanding stronger protection and quicker police response in such cases.
Police investigation into the matter is underway.
