The flood situation in Assam has become critical due to heavy rainfall in neighboring Arunachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Monday. At a press conference, Mr. Sarma reported that the Brahmaputra River and all its tributaries are flowing above the danger level.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall for the next two to three days, he added.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah called me and assured of all help to deal with the situation,” the Assam CM said.

He mentioned that the NDRF and Army would be on standby to handle any emergencies.

“All ministers, MLAs and officials have been asked to closely monitor the situation,” he added.

Officials reported that a total of 2,70,628 people across 14 districts, including the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys, are affected by the floods.
