Tremors Felt Across The Region
People living in Nagaon and nearby areas said they felt light shaking during the quake. The earthquake was not very strong, so there was no big panic. Still, it reminded everyone that Assam is a place where earthquakes can happen often and the northeast region lies in a tectonically active belt, and quakes occur frequently. People remained alert but no immediate threats were reported in the aftermath.
Recent Seismic Activity In India
This earthquake followed another tremor in Rajasthan’s Churu region just a day earlier, on Sunday, August 17, 2025. That quake measured 3.1 on the Richter scale and struck around 5:30 PM. It had an epicenter at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. The NCS reported its coordinates as 7.56 latitude and 74.01 longitude. Although small in magnitude, it added to a series of recent seismic events recorded across the country.

Assam’s Seismic Vulnerability
The northeast, including Assam, lies in a highly sensitive seismic zone. The region experiences frequent earthquakes because of its tectonic setting. The NCS continues to monitor seismic activity round the clock. Its early reporting helps authorities and residents prepare for possible risks. While the latest Nagaon quake caused no harm, it once again underlined the need for constant awareness in earthquake-prone areas.
