An Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer, Nupur Bora, was arrested on Monday after police recovered huge amounts of cash and jewellery from her homes. The Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell conducted raids and seized assets valued at nearly Rs 2 crore.
What Did Police Recover?
Officials said they found Rs 92 lakh in cash and jewellery worth around Rs 1 crore from her residence in Guwahati. Another Rs 10 lakh in cash was seized from her rented house in Barpeta.
The raids also extended to the home of her alleged aide, Lat Mandal Surajit Deka, who works at the Revenue Circle Office in Barpeta.
Under Surveillance for Six Months
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that Nupur Bora had been under watch for the last six months. She was suspected of involvement in contentious land dealings. “She had been under surveillance for six months,” the Chief Minister said. The case is still under investigation.
Who Is Nupur Bora?
Born on March 31, 1989, Nupur Bora is from Golaghat district in Assam. She joined the Assam Civil Service in 2019.
She completed her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Gauhati University and studied earlier at Cotton College. Before entering civil service, she worked as a lecturer at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), according to her Facebook profile.
Her Career in Administration
Nupur Bora began her career as an Assistant Commissioner in Karbi Anglong in March 2019. She served in that post until June 2023. Later, she was posted as Circle Officer in Barpeta, and then transferred to Kamrup district.
At the time of her arrest, she was serving as Circle Officer in Goroimari, Kamrup.
Allegations of Wealth Beyond Income
Investigators allege that Bora amassed wealth far beyond her official income during her six years in service. Officials said her cash holdings, jewellery, and property do not match her declared salary records.
The raids and recovery of cash and jewellery have raised serious questions about corruption in the civil service. The investigation will determine the extent of her role in illegal activities, particularly in land-related matters.
What Happens Next?
The Special Vigilance Cell is now analyzing the recovered documents, cash, and valuables. The arrest of Nupur Bora has shocked Assam’s administrative circle. More details are expected as the inquiry progresses.
