In the run-up to Naushera Day celebrations, the Indian Army on Monday inaugurated a 62-foot high-mast national flag at the historic Usman Memorial in Jhangar area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, a defence spokesperson said.

Naushera Day is observed annually on February 6 at the Jadunath War Memorial to commemorate the historic victory of Indian troops in the 1947–48 Indo-Pak war. The occasion honours the supreme sacrifice of Brigadier Mohammad Usman, who laid down his life during the Battle of Naushera and is fondly remembered as the “Lion of Naushera” or “Naushera Ka Sher”.

The newly installed Tricolour, symbolising courage, sacrifice and national pride, now stands tall and prominent in the region, serving as a powerful reminder of the valour and indomitable spirit of the brave soldiers who defended the area during the 1947–48 conflict, the spokesperson said.

The high-mast national flag was unfurled by the Commander of the Naushera Brigade during a solemn ceremony attended by local residents, youth and Army personnel. The event reflected deep respect for the nation’s heroes and reinforced patriotic feeling among the people.

As part of the celebrations, the Army also organised drawing, poster-making and essay-writing competitions for school students from Jhangar, Sher, Makri, Namb and Karali villages. Through their creative expressions, the students paid tribute to the armed forces and showcased their understanding of the region’s rich military history. The event concluded with a salute to the national flag and a collective pledge to uphold the values of unity, service and national integrity.
