A tense night unfolded in Jammu and Kashmir as security forces engaged terrorists in two separate, simultaneous encounters in the Kishtwar and Udhampur districts. Even as two paramilitary soldiers were killed in a separate ambush in Manipur, the operations, which were based on specific intelligence, represent a notable increase in counterterrorism efforts in the area.

What Happened in Kishtwar?

The first contact was established in the Kishtwar area. According to an official statement from the Indian Army's White Knight Corps, the operation began around 8 PM on Friday, September 19th, 2025.

The army described it as an "intelligence-based operation" where alert troops established contact with a group of terrorists. An exchange of fire took place immediately after contact was made. The situation remained critical and dynamic through the night, with the army's last update confirming that "operations are currently in progress."

What Happened in Udhampur?

Shortly after the Kishtwar encounter began, another firefight was confirmed in the Seoj Dhar area of Udhampur. The Jammu and Kashmir Police announced the encounter at 11 PM via a social media post.

The operation was launched "on actionable intelligence," confirming a coordinated effort across the region. Joint teams of the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Indian Army were deployed on the ground. During this battle of fire in Udhampur, one army jawan was hurt, according to early reports from the news agency PTI.

Why Are These Encounters Significant?

These back-to-back encounters in the Jammu region highlight intensified counter-terror efforts and a potential shift in terrorist activity. The application of targeted intelligence suggests proactive measures meant to eliminate dangers before they have a chance to disturb the tranquility.

The incidents are a grim reminder of the persistent security challenges in the region. They come just weeks after a September 8th encounter in Kulgam, where two Army personnel, Subedar Perbhat Gaur and Lance Naik Narender Sindhu, succumbed to injuries sustained in a gunfight with terrorists. The army had honoured their "supreme sacrifice," a testament to the constant danger security forces face.

What Was the Separate Incident in Manipur?

In a tragic and separate incident highlighting the diverse security threats across India's hinterlands, two jawans of the Assam Rifles were killed and five others injured in Manipur. The incident occurred on the same evening in the Bishnupur district.

A vehicle of the paramilitary force was ambushed by a group of armed men in the Nambol Sabal Leikai area around 5:50 PM. No specific insurgent group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. The men were traveling from Imphal to Bishnupur when they were ambushed, according to an official, highlighting how unstable and unexpected the fighting is in the northeastern state.
