In a disturbing sequence of events on Wednesday, an oncologist was stabbed by an agitated patient’s attendant at Kalaignar Centenary Super-Speciality Hospital in Guindy, just hours before another doctor was attacked at a different medical facility in the city.
Later that day, Dr. P Hariharan, a 49-year-old psychiatrist and Assistant Professor at Government Stanley Hospital, was assaulted by a mentally challenged individual in the hospital’s outpatient ward. Dr. Hariharan was attending to patients when he had a brief altercation with 24-year-old S Bharath, a resident of Neelankarai MGR Nagar Second Street. Following the disagreement, Bharath attacked Dr. Hariharan before fleeing the scene.
Stanley Government Hospital’s principal, Balaji, quickly filed a formal complaint at the Washermenpet police station. Authorities have begun investigating the incident, and preliminary findings indicate that Bharath had previously been treated at the hospital for a month last year.
The police have launched an active search for the assailant, as they continue their efforts to resolve the case.
