Ludhiana Police have registered a case against Aaj Tak anchor Anjana Om Kashyap, India Today Group chairman Aroon Purie, and Living Media India Limited (India Today Group). The FIR accuses them of hurting the sentiments of the Valmiki community through alleged derogatory remarks made in a TV show.

The complaint came from Chaudhary Yashpal, national coordinator of the Bharatiya Valmiki Dharam Samaj (BHAVADHAS), a Dalit welfare organisation. The show in question was aired on Aaj Tak’s official social media platforms.

According to the FIR, Anjana Om Kashyap allegedly made remarks that offended followers of Saint Valmiki, a revered figure in Indian history.

Valmiki Organisations Demand Action

Chaudhary Yashpal, who lives in Ludhiana’s Mohalla Ghati Valmiki, said, “We demand immediate arrest of Kashyap, and she also must apologize for her words uttered against saint Valmiki on a national channel.”

Vijay Daanav, BHAVADHAS chief coordinator and chairman of the Punjab Government’s Dalit Vikas Board, also demanded strict action. He said, “We want immediate arrest of Kashyap for insulting Valmiki ji and hurting our sentiments.”

The FIR has been filed under Section 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings) and Section 3(1)(v) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Police Confirm Legal Process Underway

Inspector Gaganpreet Singh, SHO of Division Number 4 Police Station, confirmed that the investigation will be handled by a DSP-rank officer, as required under the SC/ST Act. He added that the case file has been forwarded to the Ludhiana Police Commissioner’s office for further review.

Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said, “The case has been registered after taking legal opinion. At least 13 Dalit/SC organisations had complained that the tone and words used in the show by the anchor were derogatory and inappropriate. The probe is still ongoing.”

Aaj Tak & Anjana Om Kashyap Deny Allegations

In response, Anjana Om Kashyap issued a strong statement denying the charges. She said, “TV Today Network Limited strongly denies the allegations contained in the FIR registered in Ludhiana regarding purported derogatory remarks about Bhagwan Maharishi Valmiki Ji. The program in question was respectful and balanced, conducted in full adherence to journalistic ethics and with complete regard for all faiths and communities. We fail to understand how any part of the broadcast could have caused hurt or offence, as the full footage clearly shows that no derogatory reference was ever made.”

She further claimed that edited and misleading clips were circulated online to distort the truth. “Certain selectively edited and misleading clips may have unfortunately been circulated online, misrepresenting the content and intent of the program. These misrepresentations must be withdrawn immediately, as they distort the truth and malign responsible journalism.” The network also said it plans to approach the court for legal protection and to clear its name.

Media Accountability vs. Misrepresentation

This case adds to the growing debate over media accountability and digital misinformation. While community groups allege disrespect toward their beliefs, Aaj Tak claims social media distortion is fueling false outrage.

The investigation’s outcome may set a precedent on how digital clips of news shows are used, edited, and shared online, raising questions about the fine line between freedom of the press and respect for faith.
