The Andhra Pradesh government has introduced a new liquor policy, effective from October 12, 2024, aiming to privatize 3,736 retail liquor shops. The policy also introduces affordable liquor options, priced at Rs 99 or less, to reduce the consumption of illicit alcohol and generate an expected revenue of Rs 5,500 crore. The initiative encourages national suppliers to launch their brands at this price point. This two-year policy is designed to provide stability and attract retailers by creating a predictable regulatory environment.
While moderate alcohol consumption may have certain health benefits, excessive intake poses serious risks. Health experts suggest that moderate consumption, such as red wine, may improve heart health by increasing good cholesterol (HDL) and providing antioxidants. It has also been linked to a lower risk of cognitive decline, increased longevity, stress reduction, and better nutrient absorption.
However, the downsides of alcohol consumption are significant, especially when consumed excessively. Risks include impaired judgment, memory loss, hangovers, and liver damage, such as fatty liver or cirrhosis. The WHO warns that no level of alcohol consumption is entirely safe for health. Hence, responsible drinking is advised, and healthcare professionals should be consulted for personalized recommendations.
