As Union Home Minister Amit Shah prepares to visit Guwahati on March 28, 2026, political activity in Assam has intensified ahead of the Assembly elections expected in April. His visit is seen as part of a broader pre-poll strategy that the BJP has consistently used in the state since 2014.

Shah’s frequent visits, often timed before key elections have played a major role in shaping the BJP’s growth in Assam. From alliance-building to campaign messaging focused on development and infiltration, his engagements have helped the party strengthen its position. The upcoming visit will include strategy meetings, project inaugurations and rallies aimed at consolidating the BJP-led NDA’s position for a third consecutive term.

The BJP’s breakthrough in Assam came in 2016 when Shah, then party president, led a pre-poll alliance with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and others. The campaign focused on the Assam Accord, illegal immigration, and regional identity. The BJP won 60 seats, ending a 15-year Congress rule and forming the government under Sarbananda Sonowal.

In 2021, despite challenges such as COVID-19 and anti-incumbency concerns, Shah continued his campaign approach. The BJP again secured 60 seats, while its allies AGP (9) and UPPL (6) helped the NDA reach 75 seats and retain power. His messaging remained focused on demographic concerns and governance delivery.

Between elections, Shah has maintained a strong presence in Assam, with more than a dozen visits since 2019. During this period, several peace accords were signed, including Bodo (2020), Karbi (2021), ULFA (2023), and DNLA (2023). Development projects and central funding have also been highlighted as key achievements.

In recent months, Shah has continued his visits across the state. These include engagements in Dibrugarh, Barak Valley, and Guwahati, where he launched projects and held strategy meetings. The March 28 visit is expected to focus on finalizing seat-sharing arrangements and preparing for the final phase of campaigning.

The BJP is targeting a stronger mandate in 2026, with a focus on welfare schemes, infrastructure, and governance. Meetings between Shah and state leaders are aimed at strengthening the campaign strategy and addressing emerging challenges.
