Amit Shah Reviews Manipur Security Situation Amid President’s Rule

Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi on Saturday to assess the security situation in Manipur. Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and other senior officials were also present.

Review Meeting Amid Political Crisis

The meeting comes in the wake of Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s resignation on February 9, following continued violence and political instability in the state for nearly two years. Shortly after, on February 13, the central government imposed President’s Rule in Manipur, based on a report from the state governor.

A government notification in the Gazette of India confirmed that the powers of the Manipur Legislative Assembly have now been transferred to Parliament, effectively suspending the state government’s authority.

Amit Shah’s Continued Focus on Manipur

This is not the first time Amit Shah has reviewed the security situation in Manipur. In November last year, he chaired a similar high-level meeting with senior officials in the national capital. These discussions focused on assessing the state’s law and order challenges and formulating response strategies.

Security Deployment and Peace Efforts

During the latest review, Amit Shah examined the deployment of security forces in Manipur and directed the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and state police to maintain peace and stability. The central government remains committed to restoring normalcy in the region.

Ongoing Violence Since May 2023

Manipur has been grappling with violence since May 3, 2023, when clashes broke out during a rally organized by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU). The protest opposed the demand for granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Meitei community. The unrest has continued to pose a major challenge for the administration.
