Former VP Jagdeep Dhankhar’s sudden resignation has sparked a political storm. While opposition parties allege that he has been silenced and kept under “house arrest,”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has strongly denied the claims. He said Mr Dhankhar stepped down purely for health reasons and asked political leaders not to spread unnecessary doubts.

Amit Shah on Dhankhar’s Resignation

Speaking to ANI, the Home Minister said the resignation letter itself made the reasons clear. Dhankhar sahab’s resignation letter is clear in itself. He has cited health reasons for his resignation. He has also expressed heartfelt gratitude towards the Prime Minister and other ministers and government members for his good tenure,” Shah explained.

When asked about the opposition’s “house arrest” claim, Shah hit back, saying speculation should not be based only on political attacks.

“It seems like your interpretation of truth and lies is based on what the opposition has to say. We shouldn’t make a fuss out of all this. Dhankhar held a constitutional post and discharged his duties as per the constitution. He resigned due to personal health reasons. One should not deliberate much on the issue,” he said.

Opposition Raises Doubts

Despite Shah’s clarification, the opposition continues to question Dhankhar’s absence from public view. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh called it the first time in Indian history that a Vice President’s resignation looked like a case of silencing. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, went further. He accused the government of acting in a way that reminds people of “medieval times.”

“We are going back to medieval times when the king could just remove anybody at will. There’s no concept of what an elected person is. He doesn’t like your face, so he tells ED to put a case, and then a democratically elected person is wiped out within 30 days. Also, let’s not forget why we are electing a new Vice President. Just yesterday, I was having a conversation with somebody, and I said, you know, where is the old vice president gone? He’s gone,” Gandhi said.

Senior advocate and opposition leader Kapil Sibal also asked whether a habeas corpus petition should be filed to confirm Dhankhar’s safety and freedom.

BJP Stands Firm

The BJP has rejected all these charges. Party leaders say the resignation was voluntary and driven by health concerns, not political pressure. Amit Shah’s remarks are the clearest statement yet from the government on the controversy.

Dhankhar’s Exit

On July 21, the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament, Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned. At the time, he was serving as the Vice President of India and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. In his resignation, he wrote that he wanted “to prioritise health care and abide by medical advice.” He formally submitted his letter to President Droupadi Murmu.

What’s Next?

With Dhankhar’s sudden departure, the focus now shifts to the election of a new Vice President. While the opposition continues to question the circumstances, the government is firm that health was the only factor behind his decision.
