Zojila Tunnel breakthrough scheduled for June 9. Transporting supplies to the China border will become easier for the Indian Army.
The Zojila Tunnel—one of the country’s most ambitious projects—is nearing a crucial milestone that promises to be a game-changer for local residents and the Indian Army. The breakthrough for the Zojila Tunnel is scheduled for June 9, 2026. Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari will personally attend the breakthrough ceremony. This tunnel will not only reduce the distance between Kashmir and Ladakh but also ensure uninterrupted, all-weather transport connectivity.
The Zojila Tunnel is not merely a marvel of engineering; it is set to become a vital asset for strengthening both national connectivity and national security. Spanning approximately 13.15 kilometers, the tunnel is being constructed at an altitude of around 11,500 feet above sea level.
The breakthrough blast marks the completion of the most challenging phase of the tunnel’s construction. Once completed, it will provide year-round connectivity between the Kashmir Valley, Kargil, and Ladakh. Furthermore, it will rank among the world’s longest single-tube, bi-directional road tunnels.
According to transport experts, the Zojila Pass remains closed for several months each year due to heavy snowfall, disrupting road connectivity to Ladakh. The construction of the tunnel offers a significant solution to this problem, directly benefiting local residents, tourists, traders, and those involved in the supply of essential goods. Additionally,
travel time will be reduced, and economic activity in the region will receive a boost.
Zojila Tunnel: Crucial for National Security
Transport experts believe the Zojila Tunnel holds immense strategic importance. It will greatly facilitate the movement of the Army and security forces to the borders with China and Pakistan. Through this tunnel, supplies of troops, weapons, fuel, and other essential military materials can be transported easily. The Army’s transport capacity will also be strengthened.
