An Air India Express passenger caused panic on Monday morning after attempting to force his way into the cockpit. The Bengaluru-Varanasi flight landed safely, and the traveller was handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Officials are treating the incident as a case of unruly behaviour at the highest level.
Incident Details
The passenger was travelling with a group of eight. Reports suggest that some members of the group were also taken into custody by the CISF. Only one person tried to open the cockpit door. Such actions can result in the individual being banned from flying, ranging from a two-year suspension to a lifetime no-fly order.
According to the Times of India, the group entered the forward galley, and the passenger tried to “punch some numbers” on the cockpit door lock. He failed to open it but alarmed the cabin crew.
An airline official said the passenger claimed he was a first-time flyer looking for the lavatory. He returned to his seat after being asked to move away from the cockpit area.
Air India Express Statement
“We are aware of media reports regarding an incident on one of our flights to Varanasi, where a passenger approached the cockpit entry area while looking for the lavatory. We reaffirm that robust safety and security protocols are in place and were not compromised. The matter was reported to the relevant authorities on landing and is currently under investigation,” a spokesperson for Air India Express confirmed.
Cockpit Door Safety Measures
The cockpit is one of the most secure areas of a plane. It has a reinforced door with an electronic lock. To enter, anyone must punch in the correct code and receive approval from the pilots. If the pilots do not respond within a set time, a short emergency override may activate.
These measures ensure that even if someone tries to access the cockpit without permission, the pilots maintain full control of the aircraft. Airline authorities regularly conduct drills and training to prepare crews for any such incidents.
Safety and Security Protocols
Flight safety remains a top priority for Air India Express and all commercial airlines. Cabin crews are trained to respond to suspicious behaviour quickly. Passengers attempting to access restricted areas, such as the cockpit, are treated as security threats and are immediately reported to authorities.
This incident highlights the importance of following airline safety rules. Authorities continue to investigate the passenger’s intentions and whether any legal action is necessary.
