Delhi Police used Artificial Intelligence to track down and arrest a masked mobile snatcher who stole a woman’s mobile in North Delhi, officials revealed on Tuesday.

Afnan Ali was caught on CCTV committing the crime, but the face remains unrevealed due to a mask.

The incident was reported on November 24 when the complainant informed the police that her mobile phone was snatched near Tyre Market. She said an unidentified person approached her from behind and grabbed her phone and left the spot toward Gali Tyre Wali in Sadar Bazar, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police Raja Banthia.

A case was registered and a team was formed to trace the culprit. CCTV footage showed that the accused fled from the scene, but it couldn’t be confirmed as his face was covered with a mask.

At this stage, the technically strong team of investigators used Artificial Intelligence technique to virtually lift the mask off the screengrab of the CCTV footage video. His mask was lifted with the help of AI techniques, and a blurred picture of the accused was extracted,” said Banthia.

With technical surveillance, the accused was identified as Afnan Ali, who resides in Sadar Bazar. Police investigated the case further and apprehended him during a raid, and the stolen mobile phone as well as the clothes he wore during the incident were recovered.

During investigation, it is found that Ali was recently let out from Tihar Jail for merely seven days before the incident and resumed his illegitimate activities.
