Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday challenged former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on social media to own up to certain misdeeds or face the music.
In his ultimatum, Mann demanded that Channi publicly disclose details about an incident where a cricketer was asked for a bribe in return for a job.
According to Mann, the player had applied for a government job during Captain Amarinder Singh’s tenure as Chief Minister and was told by officials that he would get a job. According to the CM, Channi’s nephew, Bhupinder Singh Honey, had solicited Rs 2 crore from the cricketer as a bribe.
“Charanjit Channi, I am giving you a chance till 2 pm till May 31. Make public all the information about your nephew demanding bribe from the player for the job. If this will not be done, then on May 31 at 2 pm, I myself will bring the photo, name and meeting place in front of the Punjabis,” Mann tweeted.
The Chief Minister also suggested the possibility that Bhupinder has carried on such endeavours without informing him, reasoning that this could be why Rs 8 crore were recovered at his residence.
The CM, while addressing a gathering in Sangrur, said he had been informed about the incident when he visited Dharamshala to watch an Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket match. A player with the IPL team Punjab Kings reportedly approached the CM and told him that he had applied for a government job under the sports quota. According to Mann, the player and his father met Mr Channi, who in turn told them to meet his nephew. The cricketer alleged that Bhupinder Singh had assured him about the job and went on to
