On August 15, 2025, India will celebrate its 79th Independence Day. Many believe that the 78th should be the date. They examine the numbers- 78 is the result of subtracting 1947 from 2025. If we only consider the total number of years since independence, this appears to be accurate.
However, the official count does not operate that way. The first Independence Day was on August 15, 1947, the very day India became free. That day was counted as the first celebration, not year zero. From then on, each year has added one to the total. So, by 2025, India will have completed 78 full years of freedom, but the nation will celebrate the occasion for the 79th time.
Theme for 2025: ‘Naya Bharat’
This year’s theme is Naya Bharat, which translates to “New India.” The goal is to increase the nation’s wealth, strength, and independence. The goal is to reach these aims by 2047, when India will turn 100 as an independent nation.

The idea is to inspire citizens to work together in every field — economy, technology, education, environment, and social equality. It is about pride in the past and hope for the future.
The Red Fort Ceremony
PM Narendra Modi will hoist the national flag at the Red Fort in New Delhi. Flying Officer Rashika Sharma will assist him during the ceremony. A 21-gun salute will honour the moment.
An Indian Air Force band, including Agniveer Vayu musicians, will play the national anthem. Two Mi-17 helicopters will fly over and shower flower petals on the crowd, adding colour and excitement to the event.
Guests & Public Involvement
Around 5,000 people will attend in person. This group will include sanitation workers and grassroots heroes who have worked to improve their communities. The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign will continue, with citizens encouraged to display the national flag at their homes.
