4 Dead In Kolkata As Heavy Rain Triggers Waterlogging Amid Navratri| WATCH

Four individuals in Kolkata lost their lives in rain-related accidents ahead of Navratri Celebration. City outskirts as heavy rains caused waterlogging and traffic congestion in different areas in the city. The fatalities occurred in different incidents in Beniapukur, Kalikapur, Netaji Nagar, Gariahat, and Ekbalpur, which are located across the central and southern parts of Kolkata. 

Due to heavy rains, waterlogging caused a halt in traffic movement and metro services. Water entered homes, and most of the lower areas of the city and property were totally damaged and destroyed due to rain. A number of schools have announced a holiday in the city on Wednesday.

Train And Metro Railway Services Affected

Train and metro railway services were affected in the city and suburbs due to waterlogging on tracks, officials added in a statement.

A Metro Railway Kolkata official stated for the security of passengers, the services between Shahid Khudiram and Maidan stations have been suspended since morning.

“Truncated services are being operated between Dakshineswar and Maidan stations,” he added, stating that normal services would be commenced shortly.

Due to waterlogging of tracks, train running in the Sealdah south section has been cancelled, while skeleton services are being operated in the Sealdah north and main sections, an Eastern Railway official informed.

Train operations have been partially disrupted to and from the Howrah and Kolkata terminal stations of the Eastern Railway as tracks got waterlogged due to heavy rain, he stated. Train operations in the Circular Railway line have also been halted due to waterlogging at Chitpur yard, he added.

School Holiday Declared In Kolkata

Most of the schools have announced a sudden holiday following extremely heavy rain and waterlogged city roads. The public found it very difficult to reach their destinations due to inadequate public transport and traffic jams.

The rain was heavier in the south and east of the city, with Garia Kamdahari receiving 332 mm of rain within a few hours, followed by Jodhpur Park with 285 mm, said the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

Kalighat received 280 mm of rain, Topsia 275 mm, and Ballygunge 264 mm, while Thantania in north Kolkata received 195 mm of rain, they added.

IMD Forecasts More Rain For Kolkata.

The city is preparing for another bout of downpour as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that a low-pressure system over the northeast Bay of Bengal will deliver heavy rainfall in a number of south Bengal districts. The weather office indicated that heavy rains are likely to prevail over Purba and Paschim Medinipur, South 24 Parganas, Jhargram, and Bankura districts in South Bengal until Wednesday.
