Thirty-nine individuals, nine of whom were children and 17 women, died in a stampede at actor-turned-politician and head of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Vijay’s rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district on 27 September 2025.

The crowd suddenly increased and turned violent when Vijay was speaking to the public, and several people, including party activists and some children, fainted and later collapsed. Hours after the terrible stampede, Vijay condoled the casualties and reported that his “heart is shattered.”

“My heart has been broken. I am suffering from unbearable pain and grief that cannot be put into words. I offer my heartiest condolences and sympathies to the relatives of my beloved brethren who died at Karur. I wish a speedy recovery to all those who are undergoing treatment at the hospital,” he stated.

CM Stalin Emergency Meeting

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin called an emergency meeting after the incident. The chief minister has declared compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each victim’s family. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has requested a report from the Tamil Nadu government on the incident, sources said.

Addressing a press meet at 1 am, Tamil Nadu in-charge DGP G. Venkatraman stated Vijay’s party initially requested permission for the rally at Karur lighthouse roundana. “But keeping in view the huge crowds of the previous two rallies, we did not grant permission in that area, which was smaller in size compared to this. They gave an estimate of 10,000 people, but more than 27,000 turned up,” the top policeman said.

“The permission had been sought between 10 am and 3 pm, and it was informed Vijay would arrive by 12:30 pm. People began gathering from 11 am, but he arrived at the venue only at 7.40 pm. The crowd did not receive water or food. We are not accusing anyone, but recounting the facts,” the DGP stated.

CM Stalin Visited Karur District

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, who is arriving in Karur tonight, in a tweet conveyed shock at the tragedy. He has directed an inquiry into the stampede by a one-member panel, led by retired high court judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan.

“I have directed an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund to families of the deceased in this tragic accident and Rs 1 lakh for intensive care patients in hospitals,” Mr. Stalin stated.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated the unfortunate accident at the political rally in Karur is heart-wrenchingly saddening.

“My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this trying moment. Praying for a speedy recovery to all those injured,” he said.

Following the accident, Vijay travelled to the Trichy airport and boarded a flight to Chennai. He refused to comment on the incident to the media and shielded his face from cameras at the airport. He made a statement about the accident for the first time only after he arrived in the state capital.

“My heart is broken, tortured,” he said.

Muthiyazhagan, the Karur district secretary of the TVK, has been booked by the police. He is one among the party cadres who organized the rally of Vijay.
