India’s formal proposal to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad has been authorized by the Union Cabinet, which is headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A crucial stride for Indian sports on the international scene was taken when the decision was announced on August 27.

The approval allows the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports to submit the bid, sign the Host Collaboration Agreement, and provide all required guarantees. If successful, Ahmedabad will welcome athletes from 72 nations.

Ahmedabad as the Proposed Host City

The city chosen to hold the event is Ahmedabad. The city is already home to the world’s largest cricket venue, the Narendra Modi venue. Numerous important historical events, including the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final, have demonstrated the venue’s ability to hold international athletic events.

Economic benefits from hosting the Commonwealth Games are anticipated to be substantial. Business in the area will benefit greatly from the inflow of foreign players, tourists, coaches, and media professionals.

Additionally, the Games will generate thousands of jobs in a variety of industries. Sport science, logistics, event planning, transportation, media, information technology, and public relations will all see an increase in opportunities.

Beyond Sports: A Lasting Legacy

Officials believe the Games will leave a long-term impact beyond sports. “Beyond sports, hosting the CWG in India would leave a lasting impact, boosting tourism, creating jobs, and inspiring millions of young athletes,” said a release by the Press Information Bureau.

Inspiring the Next Generation

The government hopes the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad will inspire young Indians to choose sports as a career.
“It will inspire a new generation of athletes to enter into Sports as a career option and encourage greater participation in sports at all levels,” the release added.

If India’s bid is successful, this will mark a historic moment for the country’s sporting landscape, strengthening its place on the global map of international sports.
