18th India-Nepal Military Exercise Surya Kiran Begins

The 18th India-Nepal combined battalion-level military training exercise, Surya Kiran, commenced on December 31, 2024, at the Nepal Army Battle School in Shaljhandi, Nepal. The training, which will run until January 13, 2025, brings together Infantry Battalions from both nations to enhance interoperability and share expertise.

Key Objectives of the Exercise

The exercise focuses on:

  • Counter-Insurgency and Counter-Terrorism Operations: Strengthening tactical responses to unconventional threats.
  • Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief: Sharing best practices for coordinated responses under the United Nations Charter.

Opening Ceremony and Participation

The event began with a traditional ceremony where contingents marched to military tunes from both nations. Major General Prem Bahadur Gurung, General Officer Commanding Mid-West Division, Nepal Army, addressed the participants, emphasizing mutual learning and strengthening ties.

Participation and Collaboration

Approximately 700 personnel from the Indian and Nepali Armies are participating. The Indian contingent was warmly received with a traditional military welcome on December 29.

A Shared Vision for Security

The Indian Army shared details of the exercise on X, stating the event’s goal of fostering a shared vision for security between the two countries. The post highlighted the exercise’s significance in conducting joint operations under the UN mandate.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Exercise Surya Kiran serves as a symbol of the enduring friendship, trust, and cultural ties between India and Nepal. It offers a productive platform for engagement, enhancing collaboration in areas like jungle warfare, mountain counter-terrorism, and humanitarian efforts.
