A 17-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur died by suicide at her home after her boyfriend was jailed in a kidnapping case, the police reported on Thursday. Her family stated that she had been depressed since her boyfriend’s arrest on May 18.
The girl, a resident of a village near Sultanpur’s Lambhua, had been in a relationship with her 19-year-old neighbor for almost two years. Despite their desire to marry, their families opposed the relationship.
The girl’s father had repeatedly complained to the man’s family and brought the matter to the village council, but no resolution was reached.
Under mounting pressure to end the relationship, the couple decided to elope. On the night of May 13, they left the village together.
The following day, the girl’s father filed a police report accusing the man of kidnapping his daughter. Five days later, the police located the couple, arrested the boyfriend, and remanded him to jail for a week.
The girl was returned to her family and was asked to provide her statement in the case. However, due to some issue, her statement had to be re-recorded. She was scheduled to visit the police station the next day.
That night, after the family had dinner, the girl went to her room alone, locked the door from inside, applied sindoor (vermillion) to her forehead, and then hanged herself from the ceiling using a scarf.
The girl had discontinued her studies last year.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the girl took her own life due to depression, the police stated. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further action will be based on the report.
