India sees record spike but Shah says we are in ‘good position’ to fight Covid-19

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that India is in a “good position” in the battle against the coronavirus pandemic and the country will fight the disease with determination and enthusiasm. He added, “It was feared that how would a large country like ours would face this challenge given that we have a federal structure of governance, dense population of 130 crore people and no single chain of command.” Meanwhile, India saw a record single-day hike of 28,637 new Covid-19 cases, taking its overall tally to 853,211; the death toll stands at 22,718.

Maharashtra’s Covid-19 cases rose by 7,827 because of which the total tally of infected reached 2,54,427 with 173 more patients succumbing to the infection, the number of fatalities has gone up to 10,289. A total of 3,340 people were discharged in the day, taking the number of the recovered cases to 1,40,325. Meanwhile, Mumbai saw a surge of 1,263 new coronavirus cases, while 1,441 patients got discharged and 44 deaths reported in the city in the last 24 hours. The total number of cases in the city is now at 92,720 including 64,872 recovered. Currently, there are 22,556 active cases in Mumbai and the death toll rose to 5,285.  

Delhi recorded 1,573 fresh Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the tally to 1,12,494, while the death toll mounted to 3,371. This is the first time in July that the fresh case count has remained below the 2,000-mark for two consecutive days. The total number of Covid-19 cases in the national capital now stands at 1,12,494. The death toll due to the disease increased to 3,371 after 37 fatalities were recorded in the last 24 hours. As many as 89,968 patients have recovered, been discharged or migrated so far, while there are 19,155 active cases.

 In Tamil Nadu after a gap of a few days, the number of Covid-19 cases shot past the 4,000-mark with 4,244 fresh infections being reported, taking the tally to 1,38,470. Sixty-nine fatalities pushed the death count to 1,966. The number of recoveries continued to remain significant as 3,617 people were discharged after recovery. While, Karnataka recorded 2,627 new Covid-19 cases and 71 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 38,843 and death toll to 684.

Kerala reported 435 positive coronavirus cases, taking the tally of infections to 7,873. The state also reported two Covid-19 deaths, which took the death toll to 31 so far. Out of the 435 new cases, 128 had returned from abroad, 87 came from other states while 206 people contracted the disease through contact.  

West Bengal’s Covid-19 tally crossed 30,000 with record 1,560 new cases reported from different parts of the state. With fresh infections, the total number of cases has risen to 30,013. Twenty-six patients also died, taking the death toll to 932. At present, there are 10,500 active cases in the state.

Gujarat too once again recorded the highest spike of 879 Covid-19 cases, taking the total count close to 42,000-mark. Gujarat›s total fatalities have now reached 2,047 with 13 more succumbing to the virus. Bihar registered the highest singleday spike of 1,266 coronavirus cases, taking the tally to 16,305, while seven more deaths took the toll to 125. There are 4,227 active coronavirus cases and 11,953 people have recovered from the infection so far.
