India had slipped to second place after a 0-3 defeat to New Zealand earlier this month. However, their ninth win of this WTC cycle pushed them past Australia back to the top.
India’s points percentage (PCT) rose to 61.11%, while Australia’s dropped from 62.5% to 57.69%. Australia remains slightly ahead of third-placed Sri Lanka, who have 58.33%.
India must avoid losing any of their remaining four matches to secure a spot in the WTC final. If they win five matches in Australia, they could finish with 158 points and a PCT of 69.29%.
The two teams will meet again for the Day-Night pink-ball Test at the Adelaide Oval from December 6-10.
