India has strongly objected to comments made by the United States State Department Spokesperson regarding certain legal proceedings within India. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized the importance of diplomatic respect for the sovereignty and internal affairs of nations, particularly among fellow democracies, to avoid setting negative precedents. The ministry defended India’s legal system, highlighting its independence and commitment to fair and timely judgments.
Earlier today, Gloria Berbena, the US Acting Deputy Chief of Mission, held a meeting at the Ministry of External Affairs headquarters for approximately 40 minutes. These remarks from the MEA were prompted by recent comments from the US expressing concern over the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). The MEA previously rejected similar remarks from the US as unfounded.
Additionally, the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) raised concerns about the Indian government’s notification of Citizenship Amendment Rules (CAR) to implement the CAA, with USCIRF Commissioner Stephen Schneck testifying on the matter at a recent hearing.
