The round-robin phase of the Cricket World Cup 2023 has concluded with Team India emerging as the table-topper, winning all nine matches. The team’s stellar performance has set the stage for an intense semi-final clash against New Zealand on November 15. In the last league match, India secured its ninth consecutive victory by defeating the Netherlands with a commanding 160-run margin.
Opting to bat after winning the toss at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium, India posted an imposing total of 410 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 50 overs. In response, the Netherlands team was bowled out for 250 runs in 47.5 overs.
Shreyas Iyer played a stellar, unbeaten innings, amassing 128 runs, while KL Rahul contributed with an impressive 102 runs. Captain Rohit Sharma (61 runs), Shubman Gill (51 runs), and Virat Kohli (51 runs) also made noteworthy contributions with half-century innings. In the bowling department, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav each claimed 2 wickets. Both Captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli chipped in with one wicket each.
Remarkably, Rohit Sharma ended an 11-year-long drought by taking a wicket in ODIs, dismissing Dutch captain Scott Edwards. Virat Kohli also showcased his bowling skills, dismissing Dutch captain Scott Edwards, marking his first wicket in 9 years.
India’s victory against the Netherlands not only secured their top position in the group stage but also set a record. This is the first time that the Indian cricket team has remained unbeaten in nine consecutive matches in an edition of any ICC ODI World Cup, creating a historic milestone for the blue jersey team.
Reflecting on the match, Zimbabwe national player and coach Tasmin Granger stated on the Dafa News Cricket Show, “The number-4 problem has been a question for Team India for a long time. After the departure of Yuvraj Singh, Team India did not get a batsman for this position. The team explored many options but could not find success.
However, it seems that India’s number problem is now resolved. Iyer’s consistent performances, including a century against the Netherlands, have addressed the long-standing concern.”
