The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a district-wise forecast for several regions in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Palghar, Raigad, among others, indicating a ‘yellow’ alert due to expected ‘very heavy’ rainfall on Friday.
The IMD attributed this weather pattern to active monsoon conditions, resulting in intensified rainfall across the region, including Mumbai and its surrounding areas. This pattern of rainfall is expected to persist throughout the weekend. Mumbai is anticipated to witness “heavy rainfall at isolated places” on Friday, with a similar scenario expected to prevail until Monday. The IMD communicated this information through a statement on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Due to active monsoon conditions, enhanced rainfall activity is expected over parts of Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada during September 15-18.”
Sushma Nair, a scientist at IMD Mumbai, provided insight into the meteorological conditions behind the increased rainfall, explaining, “There’s a well-marked low-pressure system right now over the coast of Odisha. It’s likely to move inside over Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh in the next two days,” She further emphasized that the weekend is expected to be characterized by continuous rainfall, cautioning, “It’s going to be a wet weekend.”
