A startling revelation has unfolded in Jammu and Kashmir as authorities uncover a scheme where 18 Rohingyas managed to illicitly obtain ‘Indian National’ identity cards by entering into marriages with locals in the state. The investigation has exposed a widespread operation spanning seven districts, four in Jammu and three in the Kashmir valley.
According to officials, the police identified 18 Rohingyas who entered into marriages in various districts, including six in Kishtwar, three in Doda, and two each in Jammu, Ramban, Poonch, and Bandipora, along with one in the Anantnag district of south Kashmir.
Kishtwar Police reported a major breakthrough with the arrest of 13 individuals, comprising six Rohingyas and their local spouses. The Rohingyas collaborated with individuals from the Dachan area to fraudulently obtain essential documents, including Domicile Certificates, Aadhaar Cards, Voter ID Cards, and Ration Cards.
The arrested women in Kishtwar, identified as Zinta Begum, Anwara Begum, Shabu Begum, Laila Begum, Hassina Jan, and Shaheena Begum, were instrumental in facilitating the illegal acquisition of Indian identity documents.
An official involved in the investigation cautioned that the current number of arrests is preliminary and may increase as the probe advances. Interrogations of those detained during the raids in the Jammu region are expected to reveal further details.
“We are looking into every angle, be it National Security or their involvement in local crimes, if any. If something similar emerges, we will be initiating legal action separately. This case only pertains to intelligence inputs suggesting Rohingyas having access to India’s national identity cards using illegal ways,” stated the official.
The report highlights that a total of 18 Rohingyas have been arrested across three Jammu districts as part of the police crackdown on Rohingyas and their supporters involved in the unlawful acquisition of ‘Indian National’ identification cards with the assistance of locals. In Kishtwar alone, 13 arrests were made, with additional arrests in Poonch, Rajouri, and over 40 detentions in the Jammu region. The police operation also led to the recovery of illegally acquired Aadhaar cards, bank passbooks, and revenue records, shedding light on the extent of the illicit operation.
