IIT Study Reveals Shocking Truth: Tea In Paper Cups Is Poisonous

A study by IIT Kharagpur reveals that disposable paper cups, often seen as safer alternatives to plastic, can leak harmful microplastics when exposed to hot beverages. The research found that within 15 minutes of use, these cups release thousands of microplastic particles, posing serious health risks to consumers.

A recent study from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has raised concerns about the safety of disposable paper cups, which are often perceived as a healthier alternative to plastic. While plastic cups have been banned due to their harmful effects on the environment and human health, this new research suggests that drinking hot beverages from paper cups may also pose significant health risks.

The study aimed to investigate whether disposable paper cups leak plastic when exposed to hot liquids, such as tea or coffee. Researchers analyzed various types of paper cups and found that many are coated with a plastic layer designed to make them waterproof. However, when these cups come into contact with hot drinks, the plastic coating begins to leak, resulting in an increase in microplastics in the beverage.

According to Professor Sudha Goyal, the head of the study, the microplastic layer in a paper cup deteriorates within just 15 minutes of hot drink consumption. This deterioration releases approximately 25,000 micron-sized particles into the beverage, potentially leading to serious health issues.

The study highlights the toxic nature of microplastics, which can cause hormonal imbalances, weaken the immune system, and increase the risk of certain cancers. This research serves as a warning that while paper cups are often viewed as an eco-friendly alternative to plastic, they may not be as safe for health as previously thought.
