Last month, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex embarked on a special trip to Nigeria, a journey deeply connected to Meghan Markle’s recent discovery of her Nigerian heritage. During their visit, the couple traveled to Iwo, where Meghan Markle was honored with a distinguished title. The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, presented her with a traditional chieftaincy and bestowed upon her the Yoruba name Adetokunbo. Meghan expressed her gratitude in a heartfelt letter to Oba Akanbi, thanking him for the honor and for entrusting her with the name.

Meghan Markle’s letter, first reported by Western Post, conveyed her deep appreciation. She wrote, “Your Imperial Majesty, thank you for your warm welcome to Nigeria. I am deeply humbled by your blessing of the traditional Yoruba name, Adetokunbo. I treasure the name and appreciate your trust in me to carry it with grace and dignity.”

The couple’s visit to Nigeria was significant for many reasons, particularly for Meghan Markle as it allowed her to explore and understand her heritage, a journey that extends to their children. Meghan signed off her letter as Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, emphasizing the personal importance of this connection.

In addition to the royal ceremonies, the Sussexes visited a local school, where Meghan shared her reflections with People magazine. She saw herself in the students, recognizing the potential in both young girls and boys, akin to what she and Prince Harry see in their own children. Meghan Markle emphasized the importance of giving children the promise and excitement for their futures.

Prince Harry echoed these sentiments, stating that such trips are crucial for focusing on meaningful causes and that real change comes from being present and involved on the ground. The Sussexes’ visit to Nigeria aligns with their foundation, Archewell’s mission. Recently, Archewell partnered with the Geanco Foundation to lead surgical missions, promote maternal health, and provide scholarships to young female victims of terrorism in Nigeria.

Reflecting on their charity work, Meghan Markle highlighted their overarching goal through Archewell: to “show up, do good,” and their commitment to “taking action and using our unparalleled spotlight to uplift and unite communities.” This visit underscores Meghan Markle’s dedication to her heritage and the broader mission of making a positive impact through their foundation’s initiatives.
