To commemorate the centenary of Karpoori Thakur’s birth, PM Modi authored a heartfelt tribute acknowledging the late leader’s impactful legacy in advocating for social justice.
Karpoori Thakur, hailing from the Nai Samaj, a marginalized section of society, overcame numerous challenges to become a prominent political figure. Known for his life anchored in simplicity and dedication to social justice, Thakur’s impact resonated with common people until his last breath.
PM Modi shared anecdotes reflecting Thakur’s simplicity, emphasizing instances where he utilized personal funds for family matters, showcasing a commitment to humility. Even during his tenure as Chief Minister of Bihar, Thakur opted not to claim land or money for a political leaders’ colony.
Thakur’s unwavering commitment to social justice led him to take an anti-Congress stance, believing the party had strayed from its founding principles. Throughout his electoral career, spanning from the 1950s, Thakur championed the causes of the working class, labourers, small farmers, and youth. Education, particularly in local languages, was a priority for him.
PM Modi praised Thakur’s role in fortifying affirmative action for backward classes, despite facing opposition. Thakur’s policies laid the foundation for a more inclusive society, breaking the barriers associated with one’s birth and determining their fate.
Reflecting on the last decade, PM Modi highlighted the government’s commitment to Thakur’s vision, implementing transformative empowerment measures. The Prime Minister proudly mentioned achievements such as uplifting 25 crore people from poverty and ensuring schemes reach 100% coverage.
Expressing gratitude as a person from the backward classes, PM Modi acknowledged the unfortunate loss of Karpoori Thakur at the age of 64. However, Thakur’s enduring impact lives on, celebrated as a true Jan Nayak, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of millions.
