UK-based banking giant HSBC has announced that Georges Elhedery, 50, will be its next chief executive. This follows the unexpected retirement of current CEO Noel Quinn, announced in April.

Mr. Elhedery, who joined HSBC in 2005 and currently serves as the firm’s finance chief, is set to assume his new role on September 2.

“Mr Elhedery is an exceptional leader and banker who cares passionately about the Bank, our customers, and our people,” HSBC’s chairman Sir Mark Tucker stated.

“I am deeply honoured by the trust placed in me to lead this great institution into the future,” Mr Elhedery stated.

Mr. Quinn, who has been with HSBC for 37 years, was initially appointed as interim chief executive in 2019 after his predecessor, John Flint, was ousted. He officially took over the role on a permanent basis in March 2020.
