The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is expected to propose new rules for the 2026 nominees after the growing news of AI usage in ‘The Brutalist’, a major contender for the 2025 Oscars. According to reports, the Academy will bring the revised rules in April for AI, along with mandatory disclosures regarding the use of AI in movies.
Talk about AI
According to ‘Variety’ reports, the Academy has an optional AI disclosure form and is actively thinking about mandatory disclosure on future submissions. The Governor and the Branch executive committees conducted an internal review where they would assess the usage of artificial intelligence across filmmaking aspects. As reported, the intention is to heighten transparency while keeping intact traditional cinematic artistry.
The Brutalist At the 2025 Oscars
According to sources, one of the 2025 Oscar favorites, ‘The Brutalist’, is said to have used AI during post-production on a few selected sequences. The director of this film, Brady Corbet, admitted using Respeecher-audio AI, saying it was used exclusively to edit the Hungarian dialogue to change the vowel and letter accuracy, which did not change any English language performances. In other words, the lead performances by Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones remain all theirs.
The movie has bagged several Oscar nominations, such as Best Picture and Best Director for Corbet. Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, and Guy Pearce are competing in categories such as Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. The Brutalist is also nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, and Best Film Editing.
The Academy’s upcoming AI disclosure rules could change the way technology is used in filmmaking, affecting Oscar submissions going forward.
