Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, a groundbreaking musical about a transgender gangster on the run in Mexico, has made history with 13 Oscar nominations, becoming the most-nominated non-English language film in the Academy’s history. This surpasses the records set by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2001) and Roma (2018).
The film’s lead, Karla Sofía Gascón, also achieved a historic milestone as the first openly transgender actor to receive an Oscar nomination, following in the footsteps of Elliot Page, who was nominated for Juno prior to transitioning. Emilia Pérez earned nominations in major categories, including Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña), Adapted Screenplay, International Feature, and twice for Original Song.
Brady Corbet’s epic The Brutalist and the blockbuster adaptation Wicked also dominated with 10 nominations each. Meanwhile, James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown and Edward Berger’s papal thriller Conclave both secured eight nominations, though Berger missed out on a directing nod.
