Actor Karla Sofia Gascon, who was known for her role in the Oscar-nominated film Emilia Perez, has deactivated her X account, formerly Twitter. After facing backlash over some of her previous arguable posts.
The account was no longer active by Friday morning, according to Variety.
Controversial Tweets Resurface
Social media users dug up tweets from 2020 and 2021 in which the actress made contentious comments on topics ranging from Muslims to George Floyd to the diversity of the Oscars. Those posts quickly went viral, prompting widespread condemnation.
One of the most controversial tweets was against diversity at the 2021 Oscars.
Gascon wrote, “More and more, the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films. I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration, or the 8M. Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala.
She also made inflammatory remarks about George Floyd, referring to him as a “drug addict swindler” after he died in 2020 at the hands of a police officer. Floyd’s death ignited worldwide protests against police brutality and racism.
Gascon Issues an Apology
Following the negative reaction, Gascon released a public apology through a statement to Variety: “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt.”
She added, “As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”
Even with the apology, her critics kept pouring in and decided to delete her X account.
Response
While Gascon’s controversy will always be talked about, the entertainment industry, in its broad sense, seems to separate itself from such controversies. However, there is an emphasis on the accountability age that social media should bring.
This is the latest example of the scrutiny public figures have to endure about their previous statements, particularly since social media platforms retain postings for many years. At the moment, it’s unclear if Gascon will return to social media.
