Mission: Impossible 8 director Christopher McQuarrie revealed that the final installment of Tom Cruise’s hit spy franchise delivers such a thrilling experience that it left at least one early viewer overwhelmed, as reported by Variety.

“We had a small screening, and someone said, ‘I was suffocating throughout the entire sequence. I almost had a heart attack,'” McQuarrie shared, adding, “And I thought, ‘I guess we did something right.'”

The trailer for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning shows Cruise performing jaw-dropping stunts, including scuba diving to explore a wrecked submarine, flying and falling out of a biplane, and, as always, doing plenty of running, according to the outlet.

Originally scheduled for release in 2022, the film faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike, pushing its release date to May 23, 2025.

In Dead Reckoning, Ethan Hunt (played by Cruise) battled a powerful AI program known as “The Entity,” capable of predicting his every move. In the upcoming movie, Hunt continues his pursuit of The Entity, which is hidden in a Russian submarine, while also contending with a returning foe, Gabriel (played by Esai Morales).

The cast features returning stars Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, and others, alongside new additions Hannah Waddingham, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, and Tramell Tillman.

Christopher McQuarrie, known for directing previous installments like Rogue Nation, Fallout, and Dead Reckoning, is once again directing and co-writing this finale. McQuarrie and Cruise also collaborated on Top Gun: Maverick. The movie is produced by Cruise and McQuarrie, with a team that includes Chris Brock, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and others.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is set to conclude the iconic franchise with a highly anticipated release in 2025.
