Six Congress MLAs, who faced disqualification by Himachal Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania, intend to challenge the decision in the High Court.

These MLAs, including Sudhir Sharma, Ravi Thakur, Rajinder Rana, Inder Dutt Lakhanpal, Chetanya Sharma, and Devinder Kumar Bhutto, had abstained from voting during the Rajya Sabha polls, contrary to the party’s whip.

The ruling Congress party sought their disqualification, resulting in vacancies in multiple constituencies. The disqualification, executed under the anti-defection law, reduced the House’s effective strength and altered the political landscape.

Speaker Pathania justified the decision, citing the violation of the anti-defection law, emphasizing immediate cessation of membership for the disqualified MLAs.

However, the disqualified members argue procedural lapses, such as insufficient time for a response and document supply.

This development coincides with the BJP securing Himachal’s lone Rajya Sabha seat, signaling a setback for the ruling Congress.

The Speaker highlighted the need for swift judgments to maintain democratic integrity and deter party-switching phenomena.

Congress’ central observer DK Shivakumar asserted that internal political unrest has subsided, expressing unity within the party.

In a joint press conference, party leaders assured the completion of the Congress government’s full term in Himachal Pradesh.
