Heavy rainfall in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana leaves eight dead

At least 8 people died due to heavy rains in Andhra and Telangana. The leader of the opposition Chandrababu Naidu’s home on the banks of River Krishna in Amaravathi was also gushed under floodwater.

 A woman was killed when the car in which she was travelling with her son and daughter-in-law was swept away by gushing floodwaters on Tuni and Narsipatam road of Visakhapatnam District.

 The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal which crossed the coast over East Godavari resulted in very heavy rainfall in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. 

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for two days. The worst-hit districts are East Godavari, West Godavari, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and Krishna. 

A cargo vessel from Bangladesh was swept close to the Tenneti Park beach in Visakhapatnam due to stormy winds. The Visakhapatnam Marine Police said the ship’s anchor broke. 15 crew members have been rescued. Several roads in Visakhapatnam, East Godavari and Krishna were flooded. Trees were uprooted during the storm which blocked vehicles.

 As per information released by the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS) on 12 October, the state has received an average rainfall of 13.4 mm, which is several times more than the normal state average of 3.7 mm. 

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has stationed monsoon emergency teams at vulnerable locations. They have also set up a monsoon control room at the GHMC head office to address complaints and to coordinate with various emergency teams. 19 officers have been allotted monsoon special duties in the control room. 

NDRF teams have been positioned at Visakhapatnam and they will be at the disposal of the District Collector. 900 families have been evacuated in total. 7 relief camps have been opened. A red alert was issued across Telangana state. The DGP of Telangana asked people to dial 100 in case of an emergency. Five districts in Andhra Pradesh were put on high alert.
