India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kollam in Kerala and a red alert for severe rainfall in the districts of Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alapuzha and Idukki untill Tuesday.

The districts, including Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad, have received yellow alerts for rainfall for today.

According to the IMD, over a few watersheds and neighborhoods in Kerala, Mahe, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal Met subdivisions, rainfall as high as 28 mm has been reported in the last six hours and as high as 100 mm in the last 24 hours.
Additionally, a few watersheds and neighborhoods in Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal Met Sub-divisions are likely to experience low to moderate flash flood risk, according to the IMD.

Since May 18, Kerala’s city district has been pounded by constant rainfall, causing waterlogging in the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram.

“The southwest monsoon typically arrives over Kerala on June 1 and lasts for roughly seven days on average. The southwest monsoon is expected to arrive over Kerala on May 31 of this year, according to a report from the IMD.

The monsoon onset over Kerala, which signifies the advance of the southwest monsoon across the Indian mainland, is a significant indicator of the change from a hot and dry season to a rainy one.
The regions receive respite from the sweltering summertime heat as the monsoon moves northward, it continued.
